A sinus augmentation, also sometimes referred to as sinus lift, is performed when there is a need to increase the amount of bone structure in the molar and/or pre-molar section of the upper jawbone. This surgery is usually performed for the purpose of supporting a dental implant, which can be placed once the bone has healed and shows sufficient density and mass to support the implants.
While sinus augmentation procedures carry with them an over 95% success rate, patients should understand that a second augmentation procedure may be necessary if the first treatment does not provide enough regenerated bone for the placement of the implant.
